If I give people more info than just basic direction, they'll be shellshocked after their first year abroad when they realize they don't have the skills to make it and can end up in a bad situation. There's a reason that less than 1% of the US population lives abroad...

Fact: If you have to message me asking what you need to do to leave the US, there is a 95% chance that you don't have the self reliance, tenacity and persistence that it takes to successfully immigrate. I'm not being condescending, it would be irresponsible for me to spoon feed people this info

I think that setting boundaries is an act of love. It's really caring and compassionate to give someone the opportunity to change their behavior if they'd like to maintain a relationship with you, I think.
