Agree, but I think part (most?) of the problem is that for the British, who faced the majority of the Big Cats in Normandy, the M4s 'role' was ill defined. It ended doing things it wasn't designed for.

Right up to the end of the war. Both MG Battalions and Motor Battalions could do this. Vickers MG was mainstay but they'd use anything. Seems to have had a big impact in Holland in late 44.

Yes, to a degree, but look at the SU in 1941-42 and then both Germany and Japan in 44-45. Ideology, propaganda and social norms can shore up catastrophic losses.

Maybe geolocation -able? Shadows, road visible in background. Once the unit is known you could narrow it right down.
