Photograph of the Port Hills/Adventure Park fire near #Ōtautahi /#Christchurch, as I saw it at 3:45 PM. Intense, large, and ever-changing. I would photograph it into the night. I hope everyone is safe + the firefighters are having an easy time.

I spent the last few hours photographing the Port Hills/Adventure Park fire near #Ōtautahi /#Christchurch, I got some great photos but I'm too new to know what editors take photo submissions.

Any tips for news orgs or emails so I can publish these photos? #porthills #firealert #photojournalism

Within a 15 minute errand I had biked everywhere I needed to be, met 3 lovely staff, got 20 pierogis, gifted 20 to some rock-climbers, and was back in my flat grilling them up with carrots and butter.

When people talk about #urbanism #walkablecities #commmunitybuilding , this is it! Thnx y'all

She was another immigrant from N. Amer, was so welcoming to the new city, and once she heard what the Uprising staff said, she started packing a SECOND bag.

I now had a new #Christchurch errand: to give out the free pierogis. Kate had eaten such a good sandwich at Uprising, she wanted to give back.

Before biking there (a quick ride from my flat), I stopped at Uprising to inquire about their holiday hours. The staff said they never had pierogis from the Joint, and I'd have to update them.

Just north, I was able to meet Kate, the Joint's owner/chef, selling bags from the weekend's markets

Short thread about a great moment to capture what it's like to live in #Ōtautahi , from my first 2 weeks of living here!

I've been follow Foodprint, a Too-Good-to-Go-like food surplus savings app, since before I arrived. I finally decided to use it tonight for dinner, going to the Pierogi Joint

Oh amazing! I hope I can do a lot of work there myself. For graphic design they have a full Adobe suite, and for my board game design I can reserve rooms! What a perfect building.

Landed in Ōtautahi yesterday and today I'm in their brilliant library getting my library card and doing some local reading! Great book from @byroncclark.bsky.social . This is one of the best libraries I've ever been in, and I'm not just saying that as the biased child of a librarian.

Hi NZ Bluesky community! Outside of FB groups, I'm curious your best recommendations for finding and connecting with flatmates virtually.

I'm moving to Ōtautahi/Christchurch and my housing plans fell through, I'd love to learn what works best for newcomers + what you'd avoid. Thanks so much!

shucks, I'll have to wait a bit longer. Wanting to watch this before I move to CHCH, trying to prep with as much aotearoan cinema as I can

My long-term nuclear waste warning was cut from the article. But I was going to say one bit kept repeating in my head as I drove north of the site: "This place is not a place of honor, no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here."

I had 2.5 drinks there for my review in The Guardian, I felt weird in my body for hours after. Lot of confusing items on their menu.

Not exactly! I covered the restaurant this morning for The Guardian, an explanation is here: www.theguardian.com/business/202...

For The Guardian , I visited CosMc’s on Day 1 to see what a drive-thru-only business is like. The cars, the drinks, the whole setup was bad. This divestment in customers (and humans in general) isn’t a step towards a space-age future, it’s a step backwards. More:

I'm sure you weren't! But that's exactly what I'm worried about so it's good to see those fears confirmed. I think this post on Bsky has shown people to be really kind, that's different than people opening up though . . . I'll keep doing my best . Thank you!

Oh my, that is so kind of you! I just finished a CHCH doc about city council civic engagement and loved the ways everyday citygoers can help/advocate for urbanist ends. Would love to be part of whatever that looks like in 2024. I'll check in once I land!

Oh that's wonderful! How is the literary community in town? Do y'all participate in feedback/first reader groups or something of the sort? I'm mostly fantasy and sci-fi myself.

Kia ora, great to know you're out there! I'd love to talk more, is there a best way to privately chat? I'm especially curious what organizations you think I should join β€” I'll be looking for work in the urbanism/YIMBY world, but as an outsider I want to tread carefully.

Thank you Jo, that's such a great org to check out! I'd love to reach out when I come north (mid Feb rn), do you know of any arch/sci comms/urbanism orgs that might be interested in hiring an American for a year? I'd love to dig deeper into landscape architecture, as an outsider that can be scary!
