dad 2: even NFT’s — as shit as they are, they’re really just a near perfect mirror of fine arts institutions. “decentralization” isn’t real. dad 3: well, sure. there’s plenty to be said about environmental damage of NFT’s, of “AI”, and what people felt were arbitrary valuations of “pixels”, but i do think the real thorn for most people is the concept of artistic ownership & “merit”.

dad 3: ownership and copyright are necessary for an artist to make a living. to mislabel that as liberatory or above the machinations of capitalism would be foolish. dad 2: i suppose it affixes art into material reality in that way, yes. and the question of “good art” is a futile one. dad 3: art can be powerful and transformative but rarely does it challenge the structure that allows it to be seen. the artist is trapped into class abandonment.

dad 3 and 2 walk away from the canvas, which is a large image of a muscular hairless man’s abs and penis, his pubic hair replaced with a bouquet of flowers. dad 2: profit or die, baby.

dad 2: art feels like it distances itself from industry & capitaism. well, fine art, really. but is it? dad 3: well, i guess not. it is a commodity. it has value. valuation is its own type of violence, of course.

dad 2: that it is. but, i think the structure itself reproduces inequity. it becomes very difficult to distance the object from its worth. even merit feels tightly correlated to value. do we lack another language? structurally, do commercial and fine art appraisals really challenge each other?
