Sabaton - The Last Stand. Power Metal epics covering a bunch of interesting historical battles, from the charge of the Polish Winged Hussars outside Vienna, to the sacrifice of the Swiss Guard on the steps of the Vatican in 1527, to the fall of the samurai at Shiroyama. Basically all epic.

Orthe classic, sure, that's where the big fight against the Imperium is, but the pc's home planet is going to be purged. The rebellion can't spare any forces from the attack. Can you stop it. The Rebellion wins either way, but is it a victory if you've lost your homeworld?

You can have it paralel to the end of RotJ, just telling a story the films didn't touch.
There's a seond fleet in the sector. Someone has to make sure the message doesn't get to them.
A rebel defector leaves days before the mission with the details of the plan. They have to die or everything fails.

Sure, your chance of getting any one specific number is going down, but your chance of landing in the middle 3rd of the range goes up significantly every time you add an extra die. You're chances of rolling luckily high or low start to become really small, even by the 4d6 stage

My 2 pence-worth on this is that in RPGs you're very rarely looking for a specific number rather than a range (usually high or low) so from an RPG point of view the randomness *is* decreasing the more dice you add
