The White House has submitted its War Powers report to Congress for the attack on Iran.
The justification for military action rests on 1) Iran's supposed continued quest for nuclear weapons and 2) the threat Iran's missiles pose to US forces, vessels, civilians and those of partners. 1/n
"It's really telling how much more a nonsense MAGA fantasy about Greenland spooked elites in the West than the actual wielding of U.S. hard power in ways that are unprovoked, probably illegal and rule-breaking" -- @ishaantharoor.bsky.social

Labourβs coalition and strategy is fraying in every direction. Starmerβs has anchored that strategy in saying only Labour can beat Reform. And (like Caerphilly) thatβs just been shown to be nonsense. Whatβs left?

The Board of Peace might be destined to fail, but it still threatens to undermine an international system in which the U.S. was once the linchpin.

The President of Kazakhstan, sitting in the rebranded Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace during the first formal meeting of Trump's Board of Peace, calls for Trump to win a Donald J. Trump Peace Prize administered by his own Board of Peace.

Shameful, dumb and self-defeating by @washingtonpost.com
They consciously gave up one of their very best in @ishaantharoor.bsky.social
For years, the first newsletter I read after waking up & getting the kids to school was @ishaantharoor.bsky.socialβs WorldView for the Washington Post. Nothing else in mainstream US media gave readers foreign perspectives on US news. Jeff Bezos and Will Lewis killed it. Today was its last edition.

What about the guy with HALF A MILLION subscribers to his newsletter, Jeff? Why did you cut him loose? That's a lotta clicks!
@ishaantharoor.bsky.social's WorldView newsletter had over half a million subscribers and a global readership.
I'm heartbroken too, Ishaan, from the outside looking in. The WP has been one of my role models since I was a baby journalist. And your column has been essential reading since it began.
I hope you're up and firing again soon, from a new place you can be proud of.

Calls for a boycott of this summerβs World Cup are unlikely to go far, writes @ishaantharoor.bsky.social.
βThe last 2 World Cups were held amid huge controversyβ¦ But no country engaged in a full-fledged boycottβ¦ The vast love of the sport shared by many tends to win out over any moral hesitation.β
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.
Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.
