USA citizens are insular and lack a world perspective. I have taken many cruises. The most educated US citizens I met were on European and South American cruises. The worst were the Americans who cruised from SanDiego to Hawaii expressing pride that they were NOT leaving the USA!

Many Americans will claim that the USA is the best place for "career opportunity" or whatever... probably true!... but, I don't know, there's more to life than climbing the corporate ladder or lucking into a financing round for your tech startup led by a16z.

I first noticed it when I visited Kenya back in 2016. Every Kenyan I talked to acknowledged the country has problems, many of them deeply entrenched and systemic... but every single one of them were excited and optimistic about the country's future.

There's optimism and vibrancy in many places outside of the United States that have been missing from our culture, society and economy for a very long time.

It's also shocking when you visit countries that are regularly smeared as "unsafe" by US media... how inaccurate it is.

The second you leave this country for even a few days, you realize the place you call home is decaying at an almost exponential pace. The realization that you don't have to live like this is stark, and that nobody in power is taking tangible actions to fix it in your lifetime is even starker.
