"In 1986 Baudrillard was noting that in society β€œthe scene and the mirror have given way to a screen and a network”. He predicted the use of the smartphone, foreseeing each person in control of a machine which would isolate them β€œin a position of perfect sovereignty”, like β€œan astronaut in a bubble”

How the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard predicted today’s AI 30 years before ChatGPT Baudrillard’s genius lay in foreseeing what these rudimentary devices like fax machines suggested about likely future uses of technology.

On AI

"he was convinced that all it really does is enable us to experience the β€œspectacle of thought” rather than engaging in thought itself"

At the moment everything reads like a metaphor in which meaning might be retrofitted - in a desperate attempt to make it/anything make sense!

Tackling this has been set as a challenge to schools from the government, using the subtle art of fines. Causes are complicated though and often require deeper intervention, which requires funding, which isn't available so.....

'persistent school absence' since the schools were closed in the pandemic is proving difficult to recover from, I'm guessing this is what this part of the storyline is hinting at

I like live radio because I find myself listening to things I wouldn't pick from a menu, and then become enriched as a result.
But the schedules feel like podcast menus at the moment so I listen less, even to the programmes I enjoy.

This is it, I'm sorry to hear that. Similarly, new radio drama feels very unusual. We've lost so much diversity, it's not much of a cultural eco system

I've always thought the same and don't disagree but I've always paid in principle for the radio; the world service, the programmes where I'm learning or inspired. Current schedules seem flooded with repeats of journos discussing being journos, with bonus podcasts of the same...

I've been on the brink of this for ages, but finding it really hard to make the final cut. It's the illusion of being in touch with friends from past times - who I no longer communicate with anyway.

Watch live: President Trump to make an announcement on autism
YouTube video by USA TODAY Watch live: President Trump to make an announcement on autism

My story on the "historic" autism announcement is in the works.

Not included in my story is a lingering feeling that, gee, that White House briefing sure involved a lot men telling women to just deal with the pain.

TV perfection, all the little details; groovy font, scarves, umbrellas, telephones, paranoia, probably the most banging opening credits ever etc etc

(Apart from the hastily cobbled final episode......)

It appears that Nigel Farage's girlfriend had Β£885,000 in cash to buy her house in Clacton that definately wasn't for Nigel and definately not bought using his money but her name to dodge Β£44,000 in Stamp Duty.

All very suspicious and should be investigated.
