Using Sound to Heal Community On the Anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s Death
Local social justice exhibition hosts artists BSA Gold and D-Composed for sound healing event.
🗞️ I often think about community trauma and the collective experiences of hardships we have faced. I also think about healing and moving forward. Last week, I got some insight into that at a sound healing event on the anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s death.

Since Taylor’s death, I have written about the impacts of systematic violence on women and specifically Black women.
Today I invite you to read and or listen to some of those pieces and to think about women like Breonna Taylor who should still be alive today.

Breonna Taylor was murdered five years ago today in Louisville, Kentucky. She would have turned 32 this year.
Taylor’s death sparked the #SayHerName movement, and conversations about violence and brutality that women face by police and systems of incarceration.

You can find all of my work on my site: www.jewél.com
Outside of work you’ll find me sunbathing (when Chicago allows), stuffing my face with food and picking up library books that I’ve reserved (I’ll never get tired of the email notification that books are ready for pickup).
More to come! ☺️

How School Choice Contributes to Segregation in Schools
U.S. schools remain segregated, even though public school segregation is unconstitutional as of 1954. What role does school choice play?
🎓 I attended an insightful conversation about the history of school segregation and how it still persists today. I learned a lot from the speakers and it helped me rethink how history impacts our current realities. I hope it does for you too!

HillmanTok Is Bringing Black Academia to the Masses on TikTok
An informal network of online courses led by Black instructors has emerged on the app in a digital echo of the Freedom Schools of the Civil Rights Movement.
📱I wrote about TikTok and a growing community of professors and students that are creating a virtual college, “Hillman Tok” — an ode to the 80s show, “A Different World.” Students and professors said the community is especially important in an era of censorship.
