you should be able to understand *most* everything because Shadow has been in almost every main title since SA2.
before I would say Sonic Frontiers is a good place to start to get a hang of how Sonic games control but Sonic X Shadow Generations controls *very well* so. you should be good. 👍

hm. I think SA2 should be a good introduction to everyone. it is technically a sequel but more in themes and style than story.
Sonic Adventure was basically a soft reboot and the start of the Modern era.

also this list is specifically about Shadow.

I like the gameplay of Forces (not a popular opinion) but the writing for Shadow is bad. however it’s still like. vaguely important? that one’s up to you.
one last thing: I would not *personally* recommend the IDW comics.

so actually Sega was smart and released Shadow Generations right before the movie came out which goes over Shadow’s past really well. so if you just want a streamlined experience there you go.
