Leeni, seattle oct 31

Local musician Leeni opened up with minimal electro versions of Tori Amos songs, it was really good. I know tori amos and Trent reznor collaborated in the past, Leeni created what that collaboration SHOULD have sounded like.

October 31 seattle, Rabbit Hole. JG thirwell (foetus, venture bros) performed experimental music for electronics, theremin and prepared piano at a small dinner and drinks club. Probably the coolest show I will have ever experienced.

2025 Seattle: after seeing Ministry play their 80s songs earlier this year, i got to see Front Line Assembly play a Wax Trax era setlist (89-92 I think). Some songs, like Resist and Mindphaser, had already been in their non-classical setlists, but it was fun to hear some new oldies like Big Money.

2025 Seattle: Clock DVA is another old-school electro bands from somewhere near Europe I'd never thought I'd see live, last night was a fun treat. Minimal synths, minimal vocals, minimal movement. + it was good to hear Lead Into Gold's new songs live (an interesting contrast to FLA's set of oldies)

Headliners Whirr sound like they look here: cloudy, distant, blue. Not quite as heavy as openers Nothing, not as dreamy as Softcult, so all in all the whole night fit together really well.

2025: I actually went to see the middle act, Nothing. Like many post-grunge era shoegaze bands, Nothing incorporates lots of heavy riffs in addition to the dreamy guitar noise (hence the 3 guitarists and a bassist) and soft vocals (which reminds me if Blue Oyster Cult at times). Great sounding show!

Opening act Softcult would have fit right in with 90s dreamgaze/dreampop bands: atmospheric female vocals, spacey guitars, they hit all the buttons.

There was over a decade and one pandemic between this year's new Young Widows album & their previous one, i assumed they had disbanded and I'd never see them live. It was hard to get photos because they were backlit all night, but that's okay, they sounded massive, strident & overwhelmingly noisy. πŸ‘

Star theatre: opening act Helms Alee was a band I've been wanting to see. They sound like sailors on a sinking ship, sadly (and loudly) awaiting their inevitable drowning while pitching up and down in the waves.

Headliners Agalloch were amazing, and at Revolution Hall there are no bad spots to stand. They played 20+ year old tracks which hold up without sounding retro nor do they rely on nostalgia for enjoyment, just dynamic black/folk/post metal goodness.

John Haugm (solo) opened up for himself with relaxing desert rock/ambient soundscapes, next up was Dry Wedding, good local death rockers that complemented the headliners well, and... also this guy who brought his dog to the metal show. A real animal in the pit.

Melvins, now with 100% more drummers! The double drummer setup worked great, especially for the fast set the Melvins played last night (which totally fits when you open for Napalm Death. I also love their slower songs, such as when they toured with Boris)

Headliners Ministry dove deep into their 80s synthpop catalog, not at all like last year's metal line-up. Fun to hear old songs i know well like Revenge, a bunch i may never have heard, but obviously the crown jewel was hearing Al (and his dopplegangers) do Every Day is Haloween. Bop shoo bop bop!

Second up was My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. Hard to get a good photo with all the psychedelic lighting. Not as energetic as last year, but i understand that wasnt a lack of effort, more likely a reaction to a recent band loss. Still a good set.

First up last night in Seattle was Die Krupps. They brought this large metal percussion rig but only played it on 2 songs, briefly, which i bet makes the roadies annoyed. Fun to see these Germans over here!

Underworld! You may remember them from the techo-filled half of Trainspotting. It was early might technically for old folks-- 4 on the floor beats, acid bass lines, builds so slow people would cheer when the cymbal sound changed to a new cymbal sound. Boring as heck to watch, fun as heck to hear.
