It is really weird to me when people don’t like reading and books.
I get not having enough time to read. I get wanting to read more, but there are just too many distractions around you. Obviously, I get having disabilities that make it difficult to read.
But just not liking books? Who are you?

It is difficult even for Americans who live east of the Mississippi to comprehend the vast emptiness of the western interior.

The sports argument is the on-ramp. Politicians who say "I support trans rights except in sports" are either too naive to understand what they're agreeing to, or they understand it perfectly.

Sports bans aren't the destination, they're the foundation. Once you have a law that codifies trans girls as "male" for purposes of athletic competition, you have a precedent. And that precedent gets cited in the next case. And the one after that. Bathrooms. Passports. Employment.

Just a reminder that Muslims have been on this continent since the first arrival of non-Indigenous people. They were among the first generation of Americans, and have been here ever since.

WOW. Rep. Glenn @ivey.house.gov: I just got back from Selma for the Bloody Sunday anniversary. We toured old slave quarters, they looked like what we just saw upstairs [in ICE holding facility]. In fact, they might've been a little bit better than what we saw upstairs."

usually if you ask experts why an empire fell they’ll say it’s nuanced and multifaceted, so i think it’s kind of cool that with America future historians will get to just say like “oh they took the idiot train to moronsville”

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

I agree with this, but I also feel like Gaza has shown us how dehumanized our concept of “personhood” has become anyway, which means people conferring personhood on LLMs (and intelligence on artificial “intelligence”) to be, if alarming and repulsive, consistent.

Hazing or "dedovshchina (дедовщина)" is central to the Russian Army.
It produces terrible men and even worse soldiers. It is a scourge on the army, on Russian society, and on their victims.
Cruelty never makes anyone better, and few enabling environments for it that start playful stay that way.

I just had someone try the “you should be nicer to me because I follow you” response and I really think if you say that to a woman online, you are admitting you have dehumanised her enough to feel entitled to her kindness no matter how you behave with her.

Great news! This still exists. There are still <squinting at image> normal playgrounds and parks. I did this with my kid today. Does this mean we can call off the apocalyptic pedophile cabal

Pete Hegseth's murderous buffoonery, coming amid a lifetime in which he's betrayed everyone close to him and failed up from one disaster to the next, is a perfect example of how the appeal of Trumpism is that it creates a permission structure for people to openly be their worst selves
