The sight of her devastation ruined him.

It always started with firewhisky.

Poured down her throat from his personal hip flask, stoking the smouldering heat in her belly as his thumb stroked the column of her neck, fingers tensing as she swallowed.

The almost-memories slipped from her consciousness like smoke, dreams dissipating with her next breath. It was always the same.

Until she found herself hiking through woodland she felt inexplicably at home in, the air electric with recognition. Remembrance.
