Getting to yes in housing is important for young professionals, for families, for working people, for our business environment, and for quality of life.
The cost to inaction is that people have to leave Virginia to prosper. We should not want that.
"What if we don't act? What's the cost of not acting? Because the cost of not acting is people can't afford to live here."
@scvanvalkenburg.bsky.social in support of HB 816, a Virginia bill that would allow by-right multi-family housing development in commercial zones.
πVirginia
In honor of the women who have shaped Virginia and the U.S., Happy Womenβs History Month!
Letβs take time this month to recognize the accomplishments of women in America and here in Virginia, where weβve just elected a woman to serve as Governor for the first time in our history.
If that sounds crazy see this @theatlantic.com article.
βThe good news is that these cities have been warned. They can look at the crisis plaguing their coastal counterparts, see into their not-so-far-off future, and choose to do something about it.β

In Virginia housing is increasingly becoming unattainable.
We cannot allow ourselves - through inertia - to become like California.
If you can only get a house by inheriting one youβve become a place where the American Dream is dying.

βWe donβt have the luxury of slow and expensive anymore. This puts Virginia out front by moving power onto the grid faster and avoiding unnecessary costs. It reflects what Virginians have asked of us: build the capacity our economy needs while keeping energy affordable,β said Senator VanValkenburg."

The cheapest way to increase energy supply is to modernize and maximize the grid we already have.
Really excited about getting this bill, the FAST Act, over the line with @philforvirginia.bsky.social!
Most politicians just talk about affordability.
@vademocrats.bsky.social are moving the needle.
On housing supply, energy supply, health care costs, etc., we are getting things done.
"Grateful for our Governorβs courageous leadership in speaking truth to power and delivering a powerful response that put the people of Virginia and communities across the United States first. In a moment that demanded clarity and conviction, Governor Abigail Spanberger stood up for fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all." - Fmr. VA Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn

After beating the Virginia House of Delegates in the Capitol Classic, again, some people are calling the Virginia Senate basketball team a dynasty.
A great event for a great cause, @vcumassey.bsky.social!
Meanwhile in places that are building homes the rent is decreasing.
You wonβt see a more stark data set that explains why we need housing near jobs.
The weather postponed Republic Day once but not again!
So glad to join IAVA last night to celebrate the oldest and biggest democracies.
More than ever we should come together in support of democracy, constitutionalism and pluralism. Last night's event was wonderful!

Elections matter.
Thankful we have Governor Spanberger in the Governorβs mansion and a Democratic majority in the General Assembly making science-based, common-sense decisions for public health and our kids.

Shout out to Senator Louise Lucas for her leadership in crafting the Virginia Senate budget that went public yesterday.
It prioritizes people, investing in education, housing and health care. And sends working people a tax rebate while also raising the standard deduction.
Job well done!
βWhen you think about the fact that a lot of localities donβt have housing supply for a broad middle class, that's a huge problem,β [VanValkenburg] says.
Proud of our @vasenatedems.bsky.social for prioritizing housing and energy policies that help working people.
βAffordable housing. Cleaner, cheaper energy. Child care families can actually afford. Fair wages. Prescription drugs at reasonable prices. These are not partisan priorities β they are the priorities of Virginians.β

Already on its way to Governor Spanberger, my manufactured housing bill will ensure accessibility to the most affordable type of home by ensuring localities cannot discriminate against them.

Housing near jobs is the most important housing legislation we could pass.
Where metro regions are increasing supply, rents decrease and mortgage prices stabilize.
This policy will do more than anything else to get units online.

π¨Important op-ed from @vasenatedems.bsky.social leadership highlighting our affordability efforts!π¨
Like Governor Spanberger, our caucus recognizes that housing supply is a main factor driving up the cost of living.
They spotlight two housing bills I am carrying.

I just want to live in a country where the leader canβt enrich themselves with our tax dollars, the government does what the people want, and the wealthy have to follow the laws.
You know, like a democracy.
My Housing Near Jobs legislation works.
If we pass it this session, we will make real progress on ending Virginiaβs housing shortage and, therefore, help a lot of people.
When we talk about affordability, we have to talk about housing supply.
The America I love is the one that welcomes Arthur Liu - a refugee from communist oppression - and his daughter becomes an Olympic gold medalist! I don't love the America that excludes people like him, or deports them back to their oppressors, as right now with many Cubans, Venezuelans, and others.

βWeβre taking a highly mobile workforce where we already have a shortage and telling them if they want to move on professionally, they have to go to another state,β VanValkenburg said. βThat doesnβt help Virginia.β
Excited to get this done this year.

Getting rid of non-competes is good for workers, free markets, and in this case Virginia patients.
"Bill patron Sen. Schuyler VanValkenburg (D-Henrico) began working on the proposal after hearing from medical professionals who felt trapped by restrictive contracts.
