Today, at Tenryu-ji Temple in west Kyoto, I got to eat shojin ryori (vegan Buddhist monk food). Its small, colorful dishes represent the five flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami.

Veganism has long been important to me, but this added a new dimension: peace, calm, and connection to nature. 💚

Vegan dumplings and salad!

Bapoctur of Vegan Ninja, the apparently vegan mascot cartoon dressed all in green and brandishing a sword that looks like a carrot.

Best part of the day was at the end, at a vegan place called Zirael. Tomo, the chef, was so affable and funny. We chatted a bunch, the food was fire, and I just felt instantly welcomed despite not knowing Japanese. US hustle-and-bustle culture misses stuff like this.

It was the kind of day that makes you go: "Wait...life could be like this??" I know the grass is always greener; everywhere has its issues. But I felt very at home in a place driven by respect for nature, appreciation for history and craftsmanship, and vegan food everywhere.

Kyoto is unreal. I started the day at Fushimi Inari Taisha, the Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of torii, and walked north. I saw the Buddhist Tofuku-ji temple and zen garden; visited Kyoto National Museum; spent too much money on beautiful ceramics; had the finest vegan cuisine. [...]

Yup and oh yeah, they have free earplugs available on site!

Yup I liked it! I will say, there isn't much in the way of soundproofing, so you hear a lot of shuffling steps and even folks snoring in different pods lol. But it wasn't overly loud or anything and everyone was respectful.

Where do I even begin on #JMoF2026? For starters: @keesh.work and @obstriker.bsky.social made this con absolute magic. I loved suiting and hanging with you both. And a huge thank you to everyone who made JMoF happen; I know how much work it is making a con happen and this one was excellent.
