Why is any achievement to do with 'Sinners' reported as either an "upset" or a "surprise" or "unexpected"? (I mean we all know it's shitty racism but come ON, media, get it together).

Sinners is a fantastic original movie with a superb cast, and Michael B Jordan was amazing in it, playing TWINS.

In Oz they decided to make Arts degrees way more expensive than STEM. Still got record numbers of students enrolling.

A tale of two teams 😁

Anyone who says "oh these terrible places with their honour killings" have obviously never seen ANY opera, the most western European classical musical form EVOR, which is FULL of them, for all women in all walks of life if some man gets upset by anything his wife/daughter/niece/random lady does.

till lovely tenor Michael Fabiano said he was 100% on board with it seeing as he was the guy who got stabbed, and thought it an excellent move, and the media's attention moved on.
But that's what we're working with here folks.
Oh and as a final thing -

- beautiful melodies telling me TERRIBLE things.
It's like opera has the world's worst jetlag.
Covent Garden changed the ending of Carmen, cos instead of getting stabbed, she bought a gun to a knife fight and WON. Completely in character. Everyone clutched their pearls -

- thanks for nuthin' Shakespeare. I can't even watch my fave version (1970s live stage performance recording) cos Placido Domingo (serial rapist/abuser of women) sings it in blackface wtf. Yet one of my fave duets (Gia nella notte densa) is from Otello.
So yeah -

All of these operas I have mentioned are straight-up bangers.
People will watch them again and again because the music these (mostly) shit stories inspired is fantabulous.
And let's not forget the misogyny/racism/misogyny/racism double-whammy of Otello, complete with spouse murder -

Their reunion is magnificent, but then it gets sticky until miraculously the Duke arrives and does a Richard Lionheart freeing Robin Hood thing and lets all the other political prisoners out lickety split. But by then there has been a LOT of barely-singable German carry-on, so fair enough.

Her husband (a journalist, natch) is also a political prisoner in the darkest depths of a dungeon. So she disguises herself as a man called Fidelio, and goes to work at the prison, infiltrating herself into the system until she earns enough trust to be put on the level with the Sekrit Prisoners.

The only two I really like are Tosca (successful, lauded singer, rich, has own villa, and poor painter boyfriend, kills off the evil guy holding political prisoners in his castle)(we stan her!); and Leonora in Fidelio, the only happily married woman in opera.

are meant to be the "heroes". There's even a voice type in Wagnerian operas - the Heldentenor, or "hero tenor".
Nope. Most of them are weak AF and would in these modern times be posting on "Am I the Arsehole" on Reddit and getting ratioed to fuck.

And often they are really cool characters. Even Butterfly (or Cio-Cio san to give her a 'real' name yay for the Orientalism craze fuxake) is someone worthy of a story. Note how many are named after the female character. And yet the tenors (who are poor shadows of their forebears, the castrati) -

Or being led to their deaths by dumbarse men (Gilda in Rigoletto, Manon in Manon Lescaut, Aida in Aida) with all this glorious "sacrifice". ARGH. Or just dying prettily of consumption (Mimi, Violetta) but John Green probably covered that in his book.
These women are the heart of all these stories.

OR (& this drives me nuts) they sort of dissolve into death after losing THEIR MANZ.

A singer friend put together an entire show: "Death by Soprano" - & it was supposed to be a fun sort of frolic through opera, but holy fucking shit. One of them was killed by an *avalanche* but at least it wasn't her husband, her brother, or a priest (&/or a rapist who was none of the first three).

OPERA. Soaring melodies, masterful orchestral work, costumes, staging - heartstrings tugged even if a member of "the rest of you rattle your jewellery" elite - but oh god the fucking misogynistic, racist plots - like two mosquitos fucking in amber - musical glory around something sordid & ugly.
