As much as I like the character delving this goes into Thancred I think its more telling for the Scions as a whole and not just laying the blame at Thancred's feet. They should've had better codes, backup plans, proper communication, etc. Especially when I know how many of the Scions were antisocial

When we look at the grand scheme of things Varis was in fact, the least reprehensible of his family line. (That we see or interact with in some way.) Though in fairness that becomes questionable depending on how much you want to blame him for how Zenos turned out.

If I recall Varis' biggest contributions to the Garlean military in the 2 and a half expansions he was emperor was adopting structures which resulted in the deaths of less soldiers because unlike Emet he wasn't content with sending his own troops into the blender.
