Not sure if this helps you but I ended up taking the SM64 approach with the instance moves into a wall, then gets pushed away by it
instead of the usual "get as close as you can" approach
That worked well but you still need to figure out which direction to push the instance into

100% agreed, I don't get why it returns the tilemap ref, especially since you already supposedly know what the tilemap is if you use place_meeting or anything along those lines...?
You could do something jank and use tilemap_get_cell_[...] or other tilemap functions but yea... it's jank
