This photo was taken on Kaldadalsvegur, a remote highland road in western Iceland. The scene shows a solitary red car driving away along a rough gravel track that stretches into the barren, rocky landscape. The sky is moody and grey, hinting at passing rain showers. Most striking is a rare optical phenomenon: a bright horizontal rainbow - also known as a “lying rainbow” - cuts across the horizon to the left, almost like a glowing band of color on the ground. Above it, a faint arch of a more typical rainbow can just be made out in the misty sky, giving the image a surreal, almost otherworldly feel. The harsh, volcanic terrain contrasts beautifully with these fleeting splashes of color.
