Honored to be the key note for the Maraton de Mate in Ecuador w/ Mathkind. We talked about puzzles play and storytelling! How do you inspire innovation in the math classroom?

It was a game from their curriculum where they always started on 10 on a number path and then rolled dice and either added or subtracted their roll. Think the dice were supposed to be labeled differently. 🤪 But made for great discussions!

🎉🥳 Great day visiting 2nd gr. Student playing game - dice rolled and was to solve 10-12. He said what do I do? Teacher said “you lose your turn bc we aren’t doing negative numbers YET!” She did not say you can’t do 10-12. 🙌👏👏 Not limiting ss w/ math rules that expire #iteachmath #MtBos #ElemMathChat

When we set up the hundreds chart - or in this case the 0-99 chart - like this we keep the decades together making it easier to see the repetitive pattern of 0-9. So all the 20s are together. All the 30s. Etc. we keep the full decade together in the row! #ElemMathChat

Love that! And what if we changed the number of columns? What patterns would emerge? Much like in choral counting. There is a purpose as to why these rows end in 9 and are colored as they are! #ElemMathChat #MTBoS

Yes flexibility of thinking! Something we don’t always think about when quantifying things!

A2 c: number sense - having an intuition about numbers - involves adding purpose and meaning to our counts. Asking the Goldilocks question about numbers helps us make sense of all kinds of numbers! #ElemMathChat #MTBoS

It’s also a perfect number - it’s equal to the sum of its proper factors. (All factors other than itself).

I’ve been the same way my whole life! Counting serves so many purposes! Keeps the mind spinning; it’s calming like counting sheep, focuses our thinking and tells us how many!!

This is the Goldilocks question examining the relative magnitude of a number. So important to think about the value of a number IN CONTEXT! #ElemMathChat #MTBoS
