09.02.2026 21:56 — 👍 1347 🔁 268 💬 10 📌 7🇸🇩 BREAKING | A new report from Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab finds that Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are operating at least two loitering-munition drone launch sites in RSF-controlled Nyala, sharply expanding their long-range strike capability and raising severe risks for civilians. Using satellite imagery from January–February 2026, Yale researchers identified at least 85 objects consistent with “suicide drones” across two locations. Around 40 loitering munitions were observed near Nyala airport as of February 4, at a site previously linked to RSF drone operations in 2025. A second, newly identified launch site roughly 2.5 km east of the former UNAMID Sector South headquarters held at least 51 loitering munitions with launch platforms in early January, which were removed by January 22, suggesting active deployment. The drones match Shahed-136–style systems, including Chinese and Iranian variants with estimated strike ranges of 1,500–2,500 km. Yale also identified a mobile anti-aircraft system near the new launch site, indicating efforts to protect the drone infrastructure. The findings come amid a surge in reported RSF drone attacks across Sudan in January, including strikes on markets, neighborhoods, and military targets in Kordofan, Gezira, Sennar, and the White Nile. While not all attacks can be conclusively linked to the Nyala drones, Yale warns that RSF’s expanding loitering-munition capacity carries “significant implications for human security,” given its documented pattern of attacks on civilian infrastructure. The report underscores the accelerating drone arms race between RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces as the war nears its 3-year mark.
