Seeing lots of folks on the right claiming β€œghetto” (their word) people need to get jobs and get off snap benefits, as if poverty was primarily an urban unemployment issue. Short response, it isn’t. A couple of educational graphs below.

The fact that 40 MILLION Americans need help to just buy food says everything you need to know about the people running this country.

Napoleon’s Unexpected and Deadly Foe Disease not cannon balls and bullets was responsible for two of his most important defeats.

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff. As an aside that might be interesting to those reading, Napoleon lost to disease in Haiti too. Yellow fever did in his bid to re-establish a foothold in N America and led to the Louisiana purchase.

We tell our students looking for jobs to have their elevator pitch at the ready. But we need to emphasize it needs to be about β€œwhy it matters.” That’s how you hook people. Many people frame their pitch abt what they’ve done bc β€œwhy it matters” is obvious to them, but it won’t be obvious to others

β€œOne line that creates curiosity. One line to hook their imagination. One line to make them want to hear more.”

When books were being pulled from Iowa classrooms, these teens started an after-school club to read them Three Iowa City West high schoolers founded a book club that reads some of the country's most frequently banned books after a state law removing books with sexual content was signed in 2023. Two years...

Love it! Future leaders of society.

"The fact that it is so difficult to have a book club where we read banned books feels like exactly why we were doing it," Gooblar-Perovic said. "Because it’s so important.”

Lasting change can really only come when politicians who act contrary to the public interest get burned. Badly. The majority of people are sane enough to know that vaccine mandates save lives. It's time for De Santis and his ilk to get a dose of their outrage. Vote them out.

Good points. Would be funny if it wasn’t so sad and tragic. And when you have your state’s surgeon general saying this is the best course of action (an unconscionable act for an md) you can see people following.

2002 is still close enough in time to remember the measles outbreaks of just a decade prior which caused the switch to the 2-dose course of mmr. Most parents of young kids today are too young to remember that, and many weren’t even born.

I agree somewhat. But the slice of pop that this will affect is pretty small. Parents w/ young kids 0-5ish, plus those w/ immunity issues. And they are swamped in #s by the free choice, own the libs, older crowd in FL. So it’s a weird electorate down there. Still if people stand up w/ votes, it ends

I have seen talking heads reference polls that indicate this is unpopular. But I don’t have a source for that.

DeSantis moves to end Florida's childhood vaccination mandates. Doctors brace for impact Florida announced plans to end mandatory vaccination. Now scientists are assessing which of several diseases deadly to children are likely to make a resurgence and when.

Why can't we just say "DeSantis moves to harm & kill children"?

0 sympathy for silent pediatricians noted: "A lot of them don't take a strong stance on whether kids need to be vaccinated...They don't want to lose business. And there are enough anti-vax ppl who can lambaste you on Google...'"🀦

Imagine being this parent.

β€œHe was 7 years old when he contracted the disease, spending six months in a wheelchair.

β€œThe first polio vaccine was licensed in 1955, the year he got sick. "I remember…my mother telling me, 'The line was too long”

DeSantis knows better. Playing politics w/ kids lives.

"Infectious diseases don't stop with the people who say they are willing to bear the risk," said Meagan Fitzpatrick, a U Maryland vaccinologist. β€œβ€¦with an infectious disease, vaccination is never an individual choice."

Especially for the innocent kids who don’t get to choose-their parents do.
