A village on a gloomy November day, showing peasants packing up their cart with all the objects from their home, as well as sheep, dogs, and birds. Someone smarter than I am can probably identify the various items.

Vincenzo Campi, "St. Martin’s Day (The Move)," 1580s (Cremona, Museo Civico “Ala Ponzone”). Traditionally peasants who worked the fields were released from their contracts on St. Martin’s Day, Nov. 11. I've always been fascinated by the portrayal of everyday household items.

This scene shows one of the miracles of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino "in which, as a vegetarian, he refused to eat cooked partridges, making the sign of the cross over them as they came to life and flew away. The scenes are noteworthy for their effects of light and the beauty of the simple spaces in which the saint carries out his miracles." (Met Museum)
