Loved collaborating on this paper with Eddie, Lena, and Andrei! We find that children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are stereotyped as more hardworking πŸ’ͺ than intelligent 🧠. A "striver" label may seem positive, but it can unfairly gatekeep opportunities meant for the "gifted." πŸ§΅β¬‡οΈ

Excited that our work on the Brilliance-Belonging Model will be out soon in Ed Psych Review! πŸŽ‰ This model aims to explain why educational disparities are often greater in fields where brilliance is seen as necessary for success. Details in Christina's thread below. Paper here: tinyurl.com/5c4aez9w

My symposium will explore children's understanding of social hierarchy. How do children think status is earned? What does it mean to be high status? When should power be transferred? Speakers include @aashnap.bsky.social, @katiemcauliffe.bsky.social, and Mack Briscoe! Come Saturday afternoon!
