Today I shall be reading an advance proof for a review, finishing some informal book reviews, (brief interlude to teach on American Revolution), working on some short stories, & deciding if I stick or skip the book I started reading that I’m not sure about

It totally upends the Christian idea of an afterlife as relief, peaceful, free from pain. No longer a comfort at the end of a tough life. Very disturbing

My god, what a story. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the “function” and “meaning” of an afterlife in the everyday (very different context to this example) but this puts a different slant on all of that

Sometimes it’s useful to search your own name in a library catalogue, because you find out you’ve published a co-authored paper that was just published but no one told you, and it could be very useful for a forthcoming job application

I really hate how my fatigue etc makes me yawn so much. I look so rude, bored by people, or irresponsible, not going to bed at a sensible time. The yawns are so strong that my eyes have to close, which means I miss so much!

Why must so many US sitcoms include a “British” (English, RP accent) character. Is it just to mock? It’s lazy writing

And remember they have a huge surplus, so it really is just greed and cruelty at this point

Small Prophets (BBC)
Gentle but doesn’t shy from tough topics of loneliness. Pacing at times feels odd, but that didn’t detract from the heartfelt poignancy. So much beauty in the mundane & the magical.
