Small publishers (read: not self-publishing people) don’t price their ebooks this way in my experience.

I would love to see the Big Five publishers get called to testify by legislators for their anti-consumerist pricing strategy, but this problem also comes from libraries (and readers) wanting to read Big Five slop.

First, it’s a mistake to say that Trump got America into war on Saturday. What he did was respond to a war that Iran has been waging against the United States since 1979.

Cool hey did anything happen *before* 1979 between the United States and Iran

Electing Trump the first time could have been seen as an aberration, a quirk of US politics that would not be repeated. But electing him a second time sent a clear signal to the rest of the world that it is imperative to reduce military and economic dependence on the US because it is unstable.

They're sitting in an air conditioned room on a $10 billion aircraft carrier, piloting a $30 million drone to drop a $5 million bomb on an elementary school. The only thing they're sacrificing is your money

I know it’s almost impossible to say this on Bluesky without getting a strike, but if you seriously cared about peace in the Middle East, it’s Israeli leadership that you need to remove β€” ideally by an international legal process β€” while keeping the US from destabilizing it even further.

Most feature-length films these days don’t have as much cool stuff happening as this one does.

Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote:

"The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same."

NDP statement on
Iran bombings
Following the events in Iran, Alexandre Boulerice, NDP
Foreign Affairs Critic, issued the following statement:
"The NDP strongly condemns the American and Israeli bombings of Iran.
This is a dangerous escalation that risks dragging the entire region into a major conflict. The oppressive and bloody regime of the Ayatollahs is reprehensible, but its nuclear program must be managed through the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In fact, its Director General, Mr. Grossi, recently indicated that he was working with the Iranian administration to resume inspections and reiterated that there could be no solution other than a diplomatic one.
The NDP deplores the Carney government's decision to blindly support this dangerous venture by Israel and Donald Trump's
administration. We want Canada to be a voice for diplomacy, peace, and international law."

I feel this so strongly. Covid was a test of our moral integrity & decency -- *not just elites, but all of us* -- and we failed.

I genuinely think one reason Covid has been memory-holed so hard, & so crusted w/ myths & conspiracy theories, is that on some level we know this & are ashamed.

I was disappointed to read Cory Doctorow's post where he got weirdly defensive about his LLM use and started arguing with an imaginary foe.

This is one of the most scathing essays I've had the pleasure of reading β€” now if we could just force every university administrator and trustee on the planet to read it (god knows really taking it in may be too much to ask of such people)

Oh and KABIR SINGH, I fucking hated that movie. It is the product of a diseased worldview. Shoutout to the little kid in the audience who asked his parents after why he couldn’t have gone to see the live-action ALADDIN instead.
