JAMA article published online October 29, 2025, titled: Development and Validation of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA)-2 Score. Figure 3 shows distribution and ICU Mortality for SOFA-1 and SOFA-2 at ICU Admission.
SOFA-2, validated in >3 million ICU patients, incorporates contemporary organ support and treatments, showing strong predictive validity for ICU mortality in diverse international settings.

JAMA Network Open article excerpt: "Rationale and Methodological Approach Underlying the Development of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA)-2 Score." Table details SOFA-2 and SOFA-1 score differences across organ systems.
From @jamanetworkopen.com: The SOFA-2 score updates the 1996 Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, reflecting current definitions, variables, and thresholds to grade organ dysfunction in critically ill adults receiving intensive care.

JAMA study: For severe metabolic acidosis and acute kidney injury patients, sodium bicarbonate infusion doesn't decrease all-cause mortality at 90 days. Population: 379 men, 248 women, mean age 67, across 43 French ICUs. Findings: Sodium bicarbonate 62.1%, Control 61.7%.
For #criticallyill patients who had both severe metabolic acidemia and moderate to severe acute kidney injury, sodium bicarbonate therapy did not significantly decrease day 90 all-cause mortality.
