'I just want to learn': Students in limbo as many Dalhousie classes cancelled amid strike | CBC News Classes at Dalhousie University are supposed to start on Tuesday, but most have been cancelled due to a strike.

Not just classes are cancelled. DFA members have been locked out by the admin since August 20th: we can't sign students in from waitlists, can't advise them, can't share syllabi, can't help them with scholarship applications, etc. etc.

I feel so bad for my students. They have received no communication. Will they just show up for class on Tuesday and find an empty room? Even the auto-reply on my email has been disabled.

I am locked out of my email, but I can still see the (increasing) number of unread messages. For someone like me, this is enormously frustrating.

It's very weird just not doing my job. I have a constant haunted feeling that I'm not getting any work done, which is true but also for now the way it is supposed to be. I really hope the Dal board stops d--king around and comes back to the negotiating table. #keepDalstrong

I know profs don't like teaching intro courses but, as someone who's been directing academic programs for 10 years, I can say that if your introductory on-ramps aren't taught by passionate (semi-)experts, the rest of your mid- and upper-level program is f***-ed. The trenches are there for a reason.

There it is: 9:30 a.m. August 20: Dal president Kim Brooks and her board just entered history as the first “leaders” of a U15 in Canada to lockout its faculty.

They have no plan, no mandate, and not one clue.

DFA & @dalhousieu.bsky.social ended conciliation Aug 11 with no agreement. In fact, Dal Board left at noon, didn't tell us or the conciliator (their empty room below!) It bears repeating: @dalhousie.bsky.social’s team went to only 4 bargaining meetings before calling for conciliation, & only 3 conciliation meetings before walking away. They could return any time before the scheduled final meeting.

Their refusal—to date—speaks volumes.

On July 28, DFA Pres Dave Westwood asked @dalhousieu.bsky.social Pres Brooks to meet, get the Board back to the table. Her next 2 weeks are too busy. DFA wants resolution. Dal Board wants a lockout. Aug 11 conciliation meeting will tell the tale. #KeepDalStrong @ansut.bsky.social @caut.bsky.social

Any lockout @dalhousie.bsky.social would be devastating for our research programs as it freezes sending out grant applications. Lab’s staff and students are on edge & are working hard through the summer. Odd that VPRI still is sending out these grant calls when the board refuses to resolve issues.

Picket signs arrived at the DFA office today. Hopefully we won't need to unwrap them!

✔ Faculty want to teach.
✔ Faculty want to bargain.
✖ The Board walked.
