It gets worse lol.
(Note the 'Antlion Larva' mention - this is for a Half-Life setting)
That's exactly my experience as well.
We always had them, so we never cared... But in a non-magic setting, I actually need to know how you intend to loot like, 5 rifles and two whole sets of body armour, and the contents of a fridge.
Where are you putting all of it?
Oh, I forgot the craft DC for flippers... Gotta fix that.
26.02.2026 11:19 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also note literally everything has a craft check associated. So players can be truly self-sufficient on the scavenger life, if they want. (If they have the tools / skills to do it)
26.02.2026 11:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Weapons and other stuff have their own separate documents... But you can also see these still have weights listed, because it's an old document and I was still planning on using that back then...
I think I'll still keep the weight info though, in case players want to know.

Yeah, those work too.
I wasn't going to go with a literal grid, so much as 'huge item fits in huge space' for simplicity's sake, but that's only because I have literally hundreds of fucking items and I don't want to draw them all lol.
This is just one of 9 pages, in 'equipment' (not weapons):
And if they do go on a trip of 'we're gonna scrap a car' or 'gather enough wood to make a cabin' then the answer is just fucking heavy encumbrance, and that would be exclusively outside of combat, taking hours or days, so it's irrelevant to the mechanic.
26.02.2026 10:32 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If I just assign an arbitrary weight value to items based on how much space they take up, that can translate more or less to encumbrance.
Because the party isn't going to be looting fucking Styrofoam anyhow; Water, ammunition, food, batteries, are all roughly in the same ballpark. It'll do.
Current prospect is breaking items into size categories; Tiny, Small, Medium, etc., then giving each piece of clothing pockets of certain sizes.
For backpacks, it might be "Holds 2 large items" and each 'large' could also be 4 smalls, or 16 Tiny items. Some pouches are specific, like for magazines.
D&D that... Every group I have ever played with totally ignored.
It was very easy to ignore, because Bags of Holding exist (and hardly anyone reads the rules for them either), but the rule set I'm working on is also for non-magical modern settings, so I gotta... Figure shit out.
Everyone hates encumbrance in games. Unless it's the entire point of the game, and has interesting mechanics (Death Stranding), it's just... Annoying.
I've skirted the issue long enough, so I think I'm going to go with a slot-based item size system instead, rather than the weight-based normal for-

This was meant to just be a warmup but I found out the hard way that I hurt my wrist again so ig that's all for today -_-

An Arknights yuri fic, but it's doomed because the tutorial keeps getting in the fucking way whenever the MC tries to do something.
26.02.2026 06:24 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think it might be one of the areas that school is especially poorly equipped to teach, because people can do a 'book report' - but they're not actually in a conversation with anyone.
The English teacher (probably) didn't write it, and there's no back-and-forth. It's abstracted by distance.
Very.
I cannot count the number of times that the feedback from family and friends is "It's good." or "I liked it." or someone conflates feedback with criticism, and offers nothing in the way of positives, impressions, or questions - just 'this is wrong'.
Default-human-feedback is... Often useless.
it's important, when giving feedback to people, to realize that everyone needs it a bit differently and you should lean on those people to teach you how to give them good feedback. i say this because i forget this and i should not forget this. it v important.
