STP is not garbage, but it has limitations and it works well enough in smaller networks with no config.
Many networks are not designed - they grow organically.
STP issues tend to crop up as networks grow, and can be very annoying to troubleshoot as you have to wade through technical debt.

Even just looking at some of the stuff you can do from the GUI it's obvious that there's more under the hood. Shame most people don't bother. Seeing an older Windows server running SCADA or NVR with a host firewall configured is like finding a unicorn in the wild. Makes pen-testing easy, though!
