Drawing of meditators and caption, "And now I want you to send out peaceful, loving thoughts to all sentient beings on the planet who have exactly the same political, economic, and religious beliefs that you do."
We're doing it wrong.

This is why we're reading Radical Mindfulness: Why Transforming Fear of Death is Politically Vital.
Death denial and the fear of death are absolutely related to systems of oppression and supremacy.

When it feels disheartening to learn that trauma changes the brain, remember that healing changes the brain too.
The both/and.

More relevant now than we might like, it explores how our fear of death & uncertainty shapes behaviour.
The text isn't heavy per se, but the times are. (con't)
Existential fear of death + systems of oppression.

Copy of the book Radical Mindfulness: Why Transforming Fear of Death is Politically Vital by James Rowe on a coffee table
I was at the cottage last month and my own copy of Radical Mindfulness was defiled by racoons, after also destroying (and eating!) a box of chocolates. You can't really see in this image, but there are tiny claw marks on the cover and chocolately paw marks on the pages.

And you all: I really donβt think there is a way out of it- it is mandatory, inevitable, absolutely required at this crossroads for survival
If you are all βWhy bother?β about community/group work I encourage you to attend this upcoming discussion with Dr Deserie Charles:

My work in mindfulness + end-of-life follows in some follows the greats. Think The Tibetan Book of the Dead, the writing of Dr. James Carse, the clinical work of Dr. Michele Chaban, and now James Rowe, author of Radical Mindfulness.
The skills for deathcare are deeply human rather than technical.
@georgetakei.bsky.social and @bradtakei.bsky.social, maybe you'll join us!
A baby step towards dismantling systems of injustice and oppression, but the community care is a hell yes.
How does the existential fear of death lead to systems of oppression? How can mindfulness support a more just society?
Find out in our free-to-join online reading group, Radical Mindfulness: Why Transforming the Fear of Death is Politically Vital. Starts soon!
