Love this attitude coming out of Fulton County! We canβt keep expanding the carceral system endlessly. We need to use every tool in the book to LOWER the jailβs population using diversion, increasing court staffing, and expanding mental health and housing services.

One of my goals of this Council term is to hold debate & discussion in a way thatβs open and accessible to the public. You deserve that. If we can afford hours of proclamations on taxpayer time we can afford *minutes* of discussion, debate and Q&A.

Yes, thank you I am aware of that. Lol. That is why being very public about our commitments is important for accountability.

We canβt continue criminalizing poverty, homelessness, and mental illness. Instead, letβs fight for compassionate forms of public safety, and justice for all Atlantans β not just the wealthy who stand to profit from international events.

This resolution calls on APD to utilize the Center for Diversion Services to the greatest extent possible for eligible cases and to report data on the diversion to arrest ratio to City Council on a regular basis.

On average, only about three individuals per day are diverted to the CDS, even though the facility can serve 41 people at a time. Far too many eligible cases are not being diverted.

Since opening the Center for Diversion Services last year, data indicate that diversion referrals remain far below capacity. The CDS is a 24/7 facility designed to provide a safe, immediate alternative to arrest for individuals suffering from health needs or extreme poverty.

Whatβs happening at the jail is a human rights crisis and itβs morally imperative we leverage every tool to reduce the jail population. This means stepping up our use of pre-arrest diversion.

In 2023, the Fulton Jail was found by the U.S. Dept of Justice to be in violation of the constitutional rights of incarcerated people, resulting in a federal consent decree in 2025.

Ahead of hosting the World Cup this summer, this resolution calls for Atlanta to significantly step up its use of pre-arrest diversion as a way to curb unnecessary arrests and address the ongoing overcrowding crisis at the Fulton County Jail.

$35k a month for a consultant is more than so many Atlantans make in a year. What are we doing?

Atlanta has spent over $2.8M on training center litigation, consultant fees
The city has paid former city clerk Foris Webb III $910,000 as a consultant to help with a signature verification process that never even began.
This is absurd. $2.8 million is more than the supportive housing funding gap we needed filled last month. Our city is wasting taxpayer money to protect its own image at the expense of essential government services. www.ajc.com/news/2026/02...

Excited this issue is being taken seriously by Fulton County. Ultra wealthy property owners shouldnβt get away with paying less in taxes than regular people!

Would you look at that? We elect @kelseabondatl.bsky.social who championed this exact idea as a cornerstone of her campaign and others in atlanta see how it was supported and decide its also a good idea and try to implement it.
I hope it goes well because it would be a huge win for Atlanta.
