It’s no accident that there are a lot of trans and gender diverse people in fandom spaces— and with growing threats to our safety (anti-trans laws and increased hate rhetoric) creating safer spaces has never been more important. Cons can play a huge role in this. Here’s how.

Don’t require legal names on badges. Aside from being a privacy violation for everyone, for trans attendees who may not have the privilege of ID that aligns with their identity the broadcasting of a person’s legal name can out someone and jeopardize their safety.

Make sure we can use the washroom. Audit your washroom situation. Inclusive washrooms? Single stalls? There is no one size fits all, but there needs to be a dialogue with your venue and communication of guidelines to attendees with the safety of trans people (the people most at risk) at the center.
