"Death from the Skies" by @philplait.bsky.social covers asteroids and many other everyday dangers. Don't let the lurid cover distract from the good science.

The difference with plugged in appliances is that it's more likely to be immediately noticeable that something went wrong - at least I'd hope that people don't use lots of unattended space heaters. I agree with your main point though, it doesn't make sense to assume everything in the house running.

I think it would makes sense to ensure that equipment that starts automatically or often runs unattended can't trip the main circuit breaker. It would be unpleasant if house electric heating turns on at night while the car is charging and the power loss results in the freezer contents spoiling.

Interesting, I should check for that. For me, flat screen camera rotations are generally fine as long as I'm controlling it, but I get motion sickness when watching other people play, or in special situations like the low-blur monitor. Brains are weird.

Weirdly, I was getting motion sickness after switching to a high refresh rate monitor for first person games, and had to go back to traditional blurry 60fps. I'm guessing the smoother motion caused more intense vision/vestibular mismatches for me. (I also can't use smooth stick rotation in VR.)

Nice, it's been quite the journey. And Chrome WebVR / WebXR worked/works for all of them :-)

Some people were saying that he was just timing the endorsement for a bigger impact when normies are paying attention which does make some sense. But it would still have been nice to be a bit more supportive even before a formal endorsement.

Time to try this new game I got recently that I had been meaning to get around to... Huh? That can't be right. I think linear time is malfunctioning.

Elite Dangerous: Panther Clipper MK II Boosting Sound Effect
YouTube video by Crusina Luachra Elite Dangerous: Panther Clipper MK II Boosting Sound Effect

I don't mind the Bolt's vaguely UFO-like noise, but the idea of using Elite Dangerous ship sounds does sound tempting: youtu.be/XgIZwDV6NUQ

On Chevy Bolt forums people were describing which fuse to pull to disable the alert sound. It seems people are willing to get creative even if there aren't official options.

Apparently some people disable the warning sound because they find it annoying 🤬

Does this count as "clean on opsec"?

Maybe something about solar panel energy conversion efficiency? "Global energy" is the total sunlight hitting the earth, and solar panels could only turn 20% of that into electricity?

Call me old fashioned, but it'd be nice if we didn't need to struggle to try to make sense of what gov't says...

The driving school isn't a tutorial, it's a special mode to teach more accurate truck driving that was only added recently. It's intentionally far harder than the rather lax rules enforcement of the main game. (I'm pretty sure running a police car off the road would be more than a $600 fine IRL.)

By the way, the game has very nice VR support. With that, just turn your head to look around instead of moving the mouse. You can even stick your head out the side window to look back. Just don't lean on the virtual door frame, it won't support your weight.

I remember when there was a big discussion about Obama's "we also have fewer horses and bayonets" answer in a presidential debate. The quaint good old days where there was still some semblance of a shared baseline reality.

My posts were a bit incoherent - note to self: don't reply while half asleep and undercaffeinated. I'm not familiar with git fork specifically, but the general idea of making lots of small commits and then reordering and squashing them into coherent commits should still work.

That's using local git - if you're using the GitHub web gui or similar I'm afraid it's not helpful.

22.08.2025 14:54 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Just commit what you have and reorder later. I usually use "git gui" to split a messy working directory into individual commits, this can be down to single line granularity. Then reorder with "git rebase -i", including moving new commits before previous stages commits.

Is it actually Newsom having the energy, or did he mainly pick a good social media team? I admittedly haven't been following closely what he's doing, but I got the impression that he's less willing to pick fights when doing in person appearances. See for example theonion.com/gavin-newsom... ;-)

I think it's an illuminating failure mode. Counting letters is a bad fit for an LLM that works on the basis of tokens. It's a bit like asking an overconfident person to count strokes in a Chinese character if they don't know the language. (口 has 3 strokes, and complex handwritten ones get tricky.)
