Checking out the ‘House of Binns’ for future Astronomy events with colleagues from the ASE last night. Patchy cloud but we set up numerous scopes and I took the Society’s 10”
Dob. Good views of Comet Lemmon, Saturn and the Double Cluster. Facilities were good and access fine. Good fun as always.

Following the Supermoon get together at Meadow park Edinburgh last Tuesday, I took the outreach Dob into the garden on Wednesday night. A couple of attempts holding the iPhone to the eyepiece gave these results.

Took the family to see the Greenwich meridian location in Cleethorpes but they have identified wrong place. The true meridian is a further 5” east of the place shown so I drew a line with a stone! I guess this was done pre GPS.

A bright orange star close to a blue star

Alberio, taken last night from the back garden with hand held iPhone. However it was looking through the eyepiece of a 10" Dobsonian!
The Orange star is actually a number of stars very close together the biggest of which is a red super giant. It is 4383°.
The hotter blue star is 13200°.

Despite all the scepticism in the scientific community I can confirm Worm Holes are real.

Double cluster in Perseus taken with the SeeStar. Lots of nice coloured stars in the two clusters which are around 7400 light years away.

I think Trump and Putin decided awhile ago to carve out their sphere of influence. Russia gets Europe, USA gets North, central America and Greenland and who knows what China will want. The Middle East and India et al will continue to be a conflict zone.

A weak aurora last night but detectable

Processed my SeeStar image of M42.

A good look at the moon last night and a great time to see the craters along the shadow’s edge (the terminator). A pair of binoculars if you don’t have a telescope shows l lot of extra detail. I held an iPhone to the eyepiece and grabbed a couple of images.

Hoping for a little clear patch of sky tomorrow event see the moon at its best. About 50% illuminated. Perfect for X and Y 😉

There were 28 people from the estate came to look through the telescope tonight including a large number of children. They saw Venus, Jupiter and Mars and all said they enjoyed the experience. Must repeat when the moon is in the right place and the sky is clear.

Plan for Visit to Rosewell scouts next week for their Space badge includes:
Construction of a full size model of Sputnik1 ( one I built 7 yrs ago) and using sheets and marbles to make gravity wells. Advanced stuff for badges these days!

Gather a few adults and children from the estate to
look at the planets and some constellations tonight. They all
enjoyed seeing these through telescope for the first time.

It is due to be clear and very cold tonight. Sounds like the telescope will be out keeping me company looking at the celestial delights of the winter sky. Mars, Jupiter and Orion on the menu.

A moody sun today but at least it tried to light up Scotland a little bit.

We visited the National Glass Centres Studio in Sunderland and came across this. It was made by Ray Stanness as one of a series of Celestial Globes. It reminded me of Io so I took the plunge and opened my wallet.
