#1989 - Launched on 8 August 1989, on an Ariane 4 rocket, the ESA Hipparcos satellite's mission was to pinpoint the positions of more than one hundred thousand stars to high precision, and more than one million stars to lesser precision.

Hubble with its two ESA solar arrays just before they were rolled up during Servicing Mission 3B. New rigid arrays were installed. The 'living', flexible structures of the European-built arrays are easily seen. These solar panels have by far exceeded the expectations, both in terms of lifetime (65% longer life than specified) and in terms of performance (10% more output power than the expected).
