The first book was a bit rushed especially in the romance department, Simon and Vic morphing from acquaintances to serious partners so fast it made my head spin. But… this was one of those series that got better as it progressed. Good paranormal murder mysteries, drama free romantic relationship. Vexing Villains 1-3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ✒️ Alice Winters 🎙️ Michael Lesley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Books 1 & 2 Landon was born into a family of Supervillains (and boy are they a heinous bunch - changing ketchup to hot sauce in restaurants and what not). Although he is a bit morally ambiguous, he’d rather read books than rob banks. And dream of August, the Superhero of the city. Together they compliment each other and soothe the loneliness that comes with their superpowers. The first two books are obnoxiously hilarious. There are of course some sad elements - it’s written by Alice after all, but mostly insane shenanigans while saving the city with their ever growing band of brothers and a mix of weird superpowers. Book 3 is still funny but a whole lot heavier, fallowing Asmodeus with his dark past and dubious profession and Ellison - an uptight Superhero official with a heartbreaking childhood and a deadly secret. I nearly sobbed a time or two. After slow burn start some surprisingly spicy bedroom activities. So, a rather common trope, although Kevin has some unique traits within the psychic spectrum. The book was interesting and engaging but a few times in the beginning the story kind of jumped ahead making me rewind because I thought I zoned out and missed something. The culprit was quite obvious to figure out, but it didn’t bother me. Adrien English and Christopher Holmes from other Josh Lanyon’s series are a part of the story and my brain instantly wants to re-listen them. How devious! Sarcasm and deadpan humor, love and unwavering loyalty, zero relationship drama, and the way these morally gray characters have each other’s backs (while bitching about it loudly, but still - without hesitation) 🧡 And it wouldn’t be a Hitman’s Guide story without a certain Chief of Police uttering the words “Why the hell am I a part of this?!” at least once in a group chat. …or Leland telling someone about The Fence (or forcing Jackson into a Sasquatch suit) 🤣 And Michael Ferraiuolo. A total fratbro with a heart of gold. Bilson exudes a rather strong bro-vibe too, and together these two are a sweet but somewhat clueless couple. Double bi-awakening, some angst. Ezra using carrots for educational purposes 🫣 7: Overprotective big brother’s best friend. Family issues (not concerning sexuality) blowing up, leading to major changes and heartbreak on many levels. If that is not enough, then there’s the player / referee conflict of interest. Add to that some less desirable personality traits and the obstacles keep on piling. So, wee bit heavy and sad. 8: The falling-for-the-bully trope always makes me apprehensive. Although Connor wasn’t “an active bully“, my petty and vindictive side wanted Parker to seek revenge while also feeling sorry for Connor. Talk about whiplash. A lot of personal growth happened in this book and soon I cheered for the guys to end up together. Surprising twist in the end. Sentence that stuck: ”…need to be a palatable gay to appease the straights…” 9: out-off-the-closet story. Novi isn’t afraid of what the fans or the NHL thinks, but for the safety of his family in Russia, earning a reputation as a homophobe. Colby is out, but coach dating a player is a no-no. Lane - PR Manager trying hard to keep a professional facade while his natural protective instincts and nurturing side are fighting to surface, even though he’s been burned before… and this time his career is on the line alongside his heart. Heated Rivalry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Long Game ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ By Rachel Reid Narration (1)Tor Thom / (2) Cooper North Heated Rivalry is a rather typical sports mmromace. The chemistry between Shane and Ilya is scorching hot and they are my favorite couple of the Game Changers series. The book ends in a HFN situation and is almost like a long prequel. The hype surrounding the television series based on this book made me want to relisten while I’m still pondering whether or not to watch. The Long Game is the conclusion to Shane and Ilya’s story, diving into the guys personalities and minds more deeply. Spicy scenes were as hot as in the first book even without the “animosity” and first time jitters. The book made me smile, it also made me cry and many times I ended up cursing like a sailor because of Shane’s utter cluelessness - and let’s be honest here- at times, selfishness (luckily he managed to grow out of both). Also the narrow minded toxicity and bigotry of the sports world left me grinding my molars to dust. My 5th re-listen because I love everything about this series. The extremely complex wolf hierarchy, the steamy chemistry between Cooper and Oliver, the natural flow of the storytelling, world building and character development, the suspenseful plots. How everything evolves in a logical and perfectly paced manner. How the descriptions are detailed enough to paint a vivid picture but not so much that my mind would start to wander. How wolfs aren’t superheroes or villains, just differently abled people. Oliver’s reserved, even rigid demeanor and preppy way of speaking, Cooper’s fiercely independent, sarcastic and prickly personality (hence the nickname Porcupine), both conveyed so fittingly by Erik Bloomquist. If you’re apprehensive about mm romance but still prefer there to be spicy scenes, Alice has a way to make it easy on the reader - not so much for the characters 🤣 Just imagine a queer as can be twink sharing his body with a noncorporeal entity that identifies itself as straight male obsessed with boobs. There will be some hilariously awkward moments when Etienne tries to get frisky with Leo 🤣🤣🤣 Shadow’s Origin is marked as book 0.5 but you can choose whether to listen to it first or after Happy Endings. Snarky ray of sunshine who wears his heart on his sleeve and has traumas past and present. Today’s problems bring them into each other’s orbit and together they are hot AF. This book had more spice than Lily’s books usually do but she pulled it off very nicely. She nows how to make her characters down right ooze snark and still they are lovable and even sweet. The nervous babbling is absolutely hilarious. Joel’s narration fits Lily’s stories and characters and the snarky tone is spot on. Highly entertaining. There were a few trigger warnings.
