30.06.2025 12:20 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The cover of A/S/L by Jeanne Thornton. Designed by Emma Ewbank. It has the title, and the author, in bold writing: black then off-white. Along the bottom right-hand side there is a small, slightly covered image of a white person in a little make-up and a red turtleneck. They are crowded by pixilated pinks, blues, purples, yellows and - all the colours - shifting into the overall cover of the book. They have their eyes closed, looking peaceful.
“A lot of people in the [video gaming] community are trans [...] the way that kind of online upbringing where everybody kind of starts online, where you’re from, what your background is, these things matter in some ways, but they’re obscured in many more ways.” Jeanne Thornton, author of A/S/L, in her interview with Transmuted. The complexities of queer romance are explored with the brilliance of genuine human experience [...] homo-trans-phobia, patriarchy, classism; the seemingly infinite issue of forming and maintaining personal boundaries. All with a respectful author-reader dialogue, showcasing Jeanne Thornton’s profound ability to reflect upon ‘what it is to be human’ - or more specifically... ‘what it is to be queer’.
It’s hard to get past the perfect pairing of the subject of transness as explored through the setting of American gaming and internet culture in the 90s. [...] People believed whatever they wanted to and didn’t worry about the mess it made. Today, the difference is, people choose bigotry in spite of access to relevant information rather than due to a lack of it. I walked away from this book wishing I could load my progress from an earlier save. That I could go back with what I know now and be the person I always hoped would rescue me. But I can’t. Instead, I will continue. I will be me, imperfect and failing in more ways than I have yet realised... Not a hero, but not hiding either.
I did not grow up playing video games, and I was not even born when the story takes place, therefore I cannot understand many of the references of the book. It did however trigger some memories for me... “This small room, this TV laughing through the wall, this tiredness. One day, false things will fall away.” - A/S/L, Jeanne Thornton. Jeanne Thornton’s narration of trans experience as a process of active redefinition of what is possible and what counts as real. Thornton [...] blesses us with a nuanced commentary of self-acceptance as a nonlinear process that can be aided as well as hindered by community. Further down the plot, the multi-character, multi-context structure of the book isn’t a mere stylistic choice: it reflects Thornton’s belief that trans experience is inherently plural and choral. ... it prompts us to look at the complexities of community-building instead of romanticising it.

This is part of our initiative to disseminate knowledge, materials, and solidarity amongst non-cisgender & intersectional communities!
Thanks to recent financial support from LGBT Consortium and some lovely individuals x
get yer free posters, stickers & flyers. Ee by gum! We designed and printed a bunch of them because why not? We are Transmuted by the way.
Where? Check out the link in our bio, scan the QR code in the post, or send an email to contact us at transmuted dot co dot uk. What? This is part of our initiative to disseminate trans posters, graphics, and free print materials to promote trans liveabilities and issues (free shipping to UK addresses only). If you run trans events, are going to be campaigning, hosting a stall at a local pride, want to give your group members some freebies, or just want to spruce up your space with some trans artworks... Whatever it is, fill out our form or send us an email to request stock.
How we fund this. We have a limited amount of prints, funded by LGBT Consortium’s Equity Fund and individual donations - if you would like to support further designs and prints, please consider donating (via our website or bio)! How you / your organisation uses these posters, flyers, and stickers is entirely up to you - but please do not sell these products without our express permission. *Folks outside the UK will have to pay shipping as it is outside of our budget (eek)! More info is available on the form!
Why? One of the ways we work for non-cisgender communities is by making as much artwork & expending as much cultural freedom as we can muster - so creating free posters & resources is our mission! Each of our journals is full of artwork created by Transmuted’s artist, as well as so much of the work that we do outside of that... So why not make it a big part of our trans rights support?
We are giving out free posters, leaflets, and stickers to anyone helping our communities fight for trans rights!
If you'd like some material to give out at events, prides, while campaigning, to your group members, and so on - please check out the form here: forms.gle/QFAPHpsmtPbJ...

Support the free distribution of information sharing that enables trans healthcare to continue beyond the bounds of the government’s inhumane restrictions - DIY/home healthcare. Support the funding of the above through grassroots fundraisers where the money goes directly to the person in need. Mutual aid - think outside the box. Our systems are failing us and we need to look out for each other in new (and old) ways around them. Join existing movements and avoid duplication of labour where possible - this is how we can be more effective and collectively achieve equal rights for trans people in the UK.

12.04.2025 20:56 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0This guidance proposes no alternatives for trans people to access, and further pressures trans people to spend unquantified amounts of their finances on healthcare that is made precarious through the visible transphobia of the UK. The guidance is yet another attack, wholly unmotivated by care, wherein we see no alternative proposed. Where does this leave trans people? Unsupported, adrift, isolated, ostracised, stigmatised. Recent actions against trans healthcare have done, and will continue to do, little but worsen the dismal statistics of harm, poverty, and safety of trans people in the UK. The rhetoric of ‘wanting to improve care and access’ is blatantly falsified by reality; co-opted in order to confuse those in vulnerable and precarious situations, to promote the idea that transitioning is somehow dangerous or ‘abnormal’.
We must highlight the rise of institutional transphobia in the UK, and hold those in power to account, passionately and consistently. The government exists to serve the people. We need to tell them this is not what we want. This intimidating guidance signifies transgender people as a ‘test of what people will tolerate in laws over bodily autonomy’.
What can you do? Vote in your local elections* on Thursday 1 May 2025 - do your homework on the candidates in your area and what they stand for - not just now, during election campaigns when they’re trying to win your trust, but historically - what have they supported and opposed, on record, when human rights have been brought up for debate? Who has shown a solid track record of working actively for trans rights? Write to your MP - express in your own words the reasons you cannot accept the leaked guidance. Be sincere and honest, take the time to make it unique rather than using a template - be yourself. Make it clear to your MP that their job is to oppose this motion strongly and in no uncertain terms, and that if they neglect to do so, they are failing their constituents.
Speak to your friends and family about the guidance - be safe and mindful of your circumstances, utilise your privileges. Word of mouth and conversation with loved ones has more of an impact than you may realise. Behind these public debates and high-level decisions made remotely and out of context by unaffected politicians, there are people who are immediately and devastatingly harmed. This needs to be felt keenly by all and kept present in everyone’s minds. To that effect, Share pertinent trans rights organisations’ posts on social media to show your support and spread awareness. Be mindful and use content warnings where appropriate - some people will be feeling the weight of the decision harder and will need to engage - or not - with informed consent.

The UK has, for several years, worked against the rights of trans youth to transition, predictably growing to cover ‘trans young adults’ using private healthcare (i.e. getting HRT through a private transgender health service). In December of last year, the NHS placed a blanket ban on trans youth receiving any form of puberty blockers. This year, it seems, the NHS have taken measures to prevent a great percentage of trans ‘young adults’ from receiving potentially life-saving healthcare even through private avenues.
Trans people in the UK have, ramping up over recent years, fought both individually and collectively against GPs and institutions preventing healthcare options by way of: Refusing to give free blood tests that can help prevent serious health complications, Refusing to bridge prescriptions with both private and public healthcare institutions, Refusing medical support for transgender children, Publication of questionable medical reports used to deny trans people healthcare, Proposed funding of detransition services while underfunded transition services provide the exact same procedures.
What does this mean? In general, trans people in the UK already have an exponentially harder time accessing healthcare than non-trans people. This NHS guidance - alongside the historic actions of the NHS and the UK government - brings into question the very foundations of the NHS. Our NHS should focus on the general public health of all in the UK, regardless of non-expert opinions reflected in state-wide institutions, and certainly should not work based upon disproven and/or widely criticised research such as the internationally condemned Cass Review, published in April 2024. No aspect of this guidance, nor in fact any recent action put forward for the NHS in recent years, provides an ounce of the care or attention that gender dysphoria, incongruence and transition requires.
