But now they’re losing influence because of their own corruption and slush fund scandals. Some politicians in the party have begun pandering to far-right groups by spreading false rumors about immigrants and foreign tourists. The person elected today as the party’s representative — which means she’ll effectively become Japan’s next prime minister — is one of them. She has called for revising the constitution to allow a full-scale military, denied the empire’s abusing acts during World War II, and even praised the Imperial Rescript on Education, which was once used to brainwash people under the empire. It’s shameful that, in order to become Japan’s first woman prime minister, she has had to act just like the slave of patriarchy and toxic masculinity, that is, men before her — and that shame isn’t hers alone, but ours, as a society.
