Itโs not that people doubt biodiversity is decliningโitโs that we underestimate how many others already share this concern.
In our new Perspective, we review work on pluralistic ignorance and set out a research agenda to:
Do conservatives oppose all environmentalist initiatives, or does the compatibility of conservatism with environmentalism vary by sociocultural context? (more below!)

The most consistent finding? People support helping their own citizens affected by climate change way more than providing international aid. Also, both higher wealth AND emissions increase support for mitigation policies suggesting different psychological drivers for different policies (3/3)
28.05.2025 06:02 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0We found that in the UK, people who believe their nation has greater historical responsibility for climate change showed stronger support for climate aid. But in our fictional nation experiment, wealth was the stronger predictor. Real vs. hypothetical contexts matter. (2/3)

Crisis framing activates fatalism (a sense the world is beyond repair), which makes people apathetic.
A far better strategy for inspiring action is to show that change is not only desirable but also possible www.nytimes.com/2024/11/21/opinion/public-health-crisis-america.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share
A line graph depicting global oil production measured in terawatt-hours (TWh) from 1900 to 2023, highlighting production trends for various countries, including the United States, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. The graph shows That the US produces by far more oil than any other country.
The convicted felon Donald Trump plans to declare a "national energy emergency," but there's no emergency. The US produces more oil and fossil gas than any other country. There is, however, a climate emergency.
