FCC Looks to Scrap 98 Broadcast-Related Rules - Radio World As the FCC continues to pledge to rid of "burdensome" regulations, there are 98 rules up for deletion at its August open meeting.

There's 98 more FCC rules on the 'ol chopping block at its August open meeting this Thursday. 🪓

This time around, the regulations are related to radio, but they date back from the 1970s and 1980s.

A North Carolina AM Recovers After Flooding Drowned Its Operations - Radio World As Tropical Depression Chantal swept through the Carolinas in July, one radio station in Chapel Hill experienced severe flooding to its transmitter site.

Last month, flooding ravaged the two-tower AM site of
WCHL in Chapelboro, North Carolina.

Right now, its 1360 AM signal runs off a 4-watt transmitter chief engineer Jim Davis found on eBay.

It announced plans for "an orderly wind-down of its operation."

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created by Congress in 1967 to support operations of local public and radio TV stations.

Nielsen: Radio Still Top U.S. Audio Platform - Radio World Nielsen and Edison Research’s quarterly report on American audio listening shows that 64% of audio listeners tune into radio on the daily.

A quarterly Nielsen study found that 64% of Americans spent daily time with commercial radio.

That's down from last quarter, but the report on American listening habits still shows a sizable gap between the daily consumption of radio and podcasts.

Yes,Tropo...See link below. I've only been at this since 2021 and even NS on Tropo is a rare event here. And I've only seen it in the latter part of summer - end of August beginning of Sept.

On tropo? Wow, that’s impressive. NL has been reported in the reverse in the past from Mass. (Marystown) in 2007 but very rare. In that same 2007 opening, I remember APRS 144 MHz. paths showing NL to the Delmarva open, so it’s possible.

There's definitely a link with a certain airmass moving over the Great Lakes when these openings happen, too. Even, inland Ohio.

Good question. I don't know, but the openings across the Appalachians are kind of mysterious. On 9/16/20, I had 100.9 WPGI, a 4.6 kW Class A from Ind., for a good half hour (about 540 mi.). That kind of distance in a coastal plain opening for a Class A would be unusual. Yet others were missing.

While there are much higher mountain ranges out there that do block tropo (the Rockies), the Appalachians are high enough throughout Pennsylvania that oftentimes a lot of tropo openings don't get past say, Altoona. So, anytime paths from Ohio, Canada and beyond make it, I feel like it is notable.

Bouvard: Advertiser Interest in Geotargeting Grows - Radio World The combination of ZoneCasting and new dashboard analytics presents opportunity.

A new study says that U.S. radio advertising has a “historic” opportunity if it can combine geotargeting with DTS AutoStage analytics that give insight into in-car listening. 🚘

The study found that 41% of advertisers and agencies say they are “very interested” in FM booster-based ZoneCasting.

Really great eastern U.S. DX day, July 21. It started out with 92.9 WGTZ, 95.5 WXMG, 99.7 WRKZ and 105.9 WNKN from Ohio via tropo in the 8 a.m. hour, an opening that was probably going better before I found it — got in late from our vacation road trip!
