Media must stop normalizing the far right Every uncritical mention of far-right rhetoric is an editorial decision with political consequences.

Excellent critique of the media’s normalization of the far right.

Normalizing assassinations of heads of state/government is not a particularly wise thing to do for the stronger hegemon facing asymmetric conflicts.

Hyvä juttu @longplay.fi ltä kustannustoimittajista. Tällaista kulttuuri*journalismia* toivoisin isoilta toimituksilta lisää höttöisten puffien sijaan. www.longplay.fi/kulttuuri/ne...

The AI-induced RAMmageddon is taking the established tech we actually want—TVs, PCs, phones—all so the likes of Elon Musk can power their little deepfake porn generators.

Lisäksi Arttu Seppänen kirjoittaa hienossa esseessään Pentti Kaskipurosta ja hänen teostensa hiljaisuudesta. Kaskipuro-näyttely nyt esillä Sara Hildénin museossa. Hänen teoksiaan saa myös yhä hyvin edullisesti omalle seinälle!

Sandra Hüller on ylivoimainen

Long Playn kulttuurissa tällä viikolla Sandra Hüllerin haastattelu Berliinin elokuvajuhlilta. Hüller on Euroopan tärkeimpiä näyttelijöitä, Anu Silfverbergin sanoin ylivoimainen uudessa Rose-elokuvassa.

Absolutely fascinating (and rather concerning): just spoke to some classic educated German middle class boomers - the ones who still read the newspaper and listen to public broadcast radio - and they had NEVER HEARD THAT AI HALLUCINATES!!
Like, they didn’t even know the concept 🤯

Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

People often talk about the "loss of trust" in institutions, but that's like a doctor telling you you're sick because you lack wellness. It says nothing of the underlying condition, just a vague definition of the symptoms.

But here’s where the debate usually gets stuck, people mistake the weather report for the mechanic’s diagnosis. Economic stagnation explains the climate, but it doesn’t explain the machine. I've spent the last couple of years thinking about the systems behind the collapse.

🧵 @jburnmurdoch.ft.com is spot on about the conditions in his FT piece. Liberal democracy held it together thanks to growth, good demographics, and the promise of a better future. Those days are gone, and that’s the "why" behind the erosion. However...

This news conference could go on for a very long time

(byline: Gary O'Donoghue, Chief North America correspondent at the White House)

This is the president in his most enigmatic and expansive mood. During the campaign this used to be called "the weave" – meandering from subject to subject, often the connections not immediately obvious.

It's interesting to watch analysts and officials shaped by a world in the 90s and 00s that assumed an inevitable onward march of free trade and benevolent US hegemony struggle to adapt to a US president willing to destroy its foundations

Even though signs of these risks were already visible by 2003

A barely altered play on "Which Way Western Man?" a foundational white nationalist text arguing Jews, racial mixing & equality are destroying society. DHS prev tweeted in August. It required no interpretation, but the media's role was to pretend it was a Rorschach test and help surface WH denials.

If you've got this far, thank you.

It was a wild time, and a big lesson in how media uses social media, and the 'immediacy' of news, without fact-checking.

I'm rather fond of the whole episode now, and it's certainly influenced how I use, and protect, my own social media use.

One final thing...

So, today marks 10 years since the passing of Bowie.

It also marks 10 years since I put something on Twitter about it which resulted in me having to take a day off work, chase down various international media, get blocked by half of Australia, and end up the filling in a Kanye and Madonna sandwich.
