The wigmaking isn’t even important to the plot! The scene in question might not even survive the next few drafts!

The problem with researching things for your fantasy book is you start out searching for old wigmaking techniques, and three days later you’re reading about the destruction of ancient archives and the discovery of sixteen charred pages of “translated accounts” by a guy who didn’t know the language.

There are many moments of comfort and peace in his movies and even the manga, and it’s totally fine to prefer the low-stakes films. It’s when *corporations* market something as ghibli-esque in an attempt to capitalize on the need for comfort and escape that I get a little persnickety about it.

There’s even a point where she’s tempted with an illusion of her mother as a loving, caring figure, instead of her real mother who didn’t want to risk loving her when all her other children had passed. Nausicaa knows that a pretty illusion won’t heal her.

In the Nausicaa manga, Nausicaa is given a choice to have a quiet, peaceful life in an idyllic setting. At this point in the story, she’s been through the wringer. She desperately yearns to stay, but she chooses to leave. It’s a trope you also see in myths like the Odyssey.

Every time something is described as “ghibli-esque” I have to ask whether that means it’s anti-war/industrial greed or if it just evokes the feeling you get when you see a gif of animated flowers

Yes, pirating is upsetting. We try not to think about how often our books have been pirated. But an AI company stealing our books to train its program is foul. Rancid. It’s the kind of relentless, soulless greed that a character like Sam Vimes would make grim comments about before dismantling it.
