It really was an unhinged situation! I’m having fun writing Queer books she would hate, though, so that’s a happy ending!

I was a TA for a different prof, but her students would come to my office hours crying about how they were going to switch majors/give up on writing altogether. Writing instructors should never demoralize their students.

Years later, she tried to sabotage my attempt to reveal a department-wide plaigarism scandal led by several prominent professors. I never proved her involvement but I’m 99% sure she was the ringleader.

She was almost gleeful about dashing the hopes of “genre writers.”

When I told her that, she said, “there are many vanity presses that make you pay to publish, but they don’t make you a poet.” I pointed out that the magazine was pro/union eligible and had already paid me. I will always remember her expression.

A professor once waxed philosophic about a misogynist’s poem before telling me that mine would never sell because it involved magic/fantasy. She said that I should stick to writing about “the real world.” The poem she’d been trashing had just been accepted into a magazine.

We have wildly different preferred writing environments.

Foxglove: sitting weirdly on a chair, possibly upside-down, writing on the phone in complete silence

Iris: In the middle of a sensory maelstrom, but the keyboard + computer system is immaculate

Does Iris get imposter syndrome? Honestly, when she’s writing, so much is going on (videos playing on TV, possibly music, cats trying to sit on the keyboard every .5 seconds, notifications pinging, the cats have now decided to climb her like a cat tree) that there’s no room for it

Having sudden imposter syndrome in the middle of writing an intense scene is less than fun, because in one moment, a hot man is suffering, and the next, a hot (due to HRT hot flashes) man is suffering

Speaking of cats hating the strangest things, the black cat hates the McElroy brothers specifically? I kid you not, I can put on any other podcast or music and he’s fine, but if I put on MBMBAM he will yowl and smack the phone around until I turn it off.

(She’s technically a little older than kitten age now, but she’s still The Kitten comparitavely) Keep what you know of tabbies in mind when I say that she is the best-behaved cat of the bunch.

I am brimming with holiday spirit

Maybe that explains why one of my former professors would bring the kittens she was fostering to her office hours. She was a great professor, don’t get me wrong, but I think the kittens were the main draw.

Astra: the 99.95% of cats that are NOT graceful whatsoever and keep needing to be rescued from the top of doors (how did they get there???)

I’d say that the character of ours who most accurately represents a scrungly little cat that you have to fish out of the gutter would be Marius Chastain. That man gets the worst haircut of his life, rolls down a muddy hill, is exposed to Hiking, and gets hunted by multiple burly men.
