Happy #BCDay ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Here is our most impressive BC specimen, the Lytton Jelly Roll - from Lytton, BC!

It's the largest turbidite (a sedimentary structure formed by an underwater avalanche) in the world! ๐ŸŒŠ

#NationalRainDay ๐ŸŒง๏ธ My favourite rain fun fact:

Deep within Neptune and Uranus, it rains diamonds - or so astronomers and physicists have suspected for nearly 40 years!

Come on Earth, step it uppp ๐Ÿ‘†

Isnโ€™t it amazing how rocks on Mars are similar to those on Earth?ย

The presence of conglomerate and sandstones on Mars is evidence of moving water.

The red color is thought to be iron staining, which is nearly ubiquitous on Mars and gives it the name "Red Planet."

Sand, a geological canvas, reflects Earth's history!ย

Its variety of colours - from golden beaches, red deserts, and black sand stem from the minerals within.

Wind, water, and time grind rocks into grains, each colour a story of local geology.

The Megalodon was the largest fish that ever lived!
ย
The largest individuals measured up to 58 feet or even larger. That's about three times as big as the largest sharks in the ocean today.

The largest megalodon tooth ever discovered was about the length of a TV remote.

The Stawamus Chief, often called "The Chief," is a massive granite monolith and is not actually a volcano.

It was formed by the cooling and solidification of magma deep underground, creating a granodiorite pluton.

Orogenic gold links to continent assembly:

Mountain building exposes weaknesses in Earth's crust, forming faults.

Metal-rich fluids travel these pathways and when encountering certain changes in temperature or pH, these metals can precipitate out giving rise to mineral deposits!

With magma thatโ€™s sticky, gas remains trapped inside as the magma rises up through the volcano.

The gas bubbles eventually connect and rip apart the magma into molten ash and rocks, all of which explode out of the volcano faster than the speed of sound!

Streak is the color of a mineral when it is crushed into powder. To determine this, we drag the material across a porcelain square.ย

The color you find on the square may be strikingly different from that of the mineral, but itโ€™ll remain consistent between different specimens!

Where does wind come from?

Wind originates from the uneven heating of the Earth's surface by the sun.

This uneven heating creates differences in air pressure, causing air to move from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure, resulting in wind ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ๐ŸŒ
