yeah it's immense. I enjoy every moment with it, but I am also gonna need to revisit quite a bit for it all to really sink in

tbh I kinda felt this way about it on release. the only thing that really carried it for me was that it looked and felt nextgen for the time, and of course any scene with Bohan lol. the cutscenes I felt were pretty impressive in general, from what I remember.

Genius "You might also like" section, recommending "The Manifold Curiosity" and "Marathon" by Kayo Dot, followed by "Cool, Daddy Cool" by Kid Rock. I have no idea what led the engine to draw this conclusion.

and ZOE was pretty cool too. I never got far in it, but I really liked just floating around blowing up all the buildings in the first level.

Having a PS2 at the start of the gen as a kid, where I still played with video games like toys, was absolutely incredible honestly. best console ever.

I have this exact same core memory. I remember shooting every bottle off the rack in the little tanker lounge area, shooting the little ice bucket, all the magazines, the glass window, punching all the lockers. I got hours out of that demo.

wow, I too watched the pilot of the x-files today. it IS great, I am so stoked for my own re-watch.

It's incredible to imagine a game like this published by EA, of all things. A strange, otherworldly adventure game that isn't fully like anything else on the platform, especially for the year it came out.

It's a true curiosity that I am glad I experienced for myself, outside of a video essay.

It lets you save anywhere though, so it's fine. Save often.

It's not a scary game, but it really isn't meant to be. It doesn't try to be scary. It really is reaching for something a bit headier than cheap scares ... and watching it fall short of that makes for some great entertainment value.

Sometimes the progression is pretty obscure. I had to look at a guide once or twice, just to confirm that something I'd already tried was actually correct, and that I'd just done it wrong. Some progress I felt almost lucky to stumble into.

It also loves to kill you with instant death traps.

Most of the game unfolds in an exploratory fashion, with a handful of (genuinely awful) action sequences to break it up. Wandering around the complex, finding key items, solving puzzles, and occasionally getting extremely lost, etc. It's a serviceable gameplay loop, tried and true.

But it also has this certain ethereal quality to its environments, combined with its odd music, that just creates an experience that could *only* have come out of 1996. It's a strange mix of detail and barrenness that gives the game a near surreal quality. Like I'm playing a PS1 game from a dream.

And a lot of it is. It's absolutely hilarious. Watching the story unfold is a total delight. Everything the main character says is delivered with sheer, empty-headed bewilderment. It brings the player in on the joke, letting you watch this guy fumble around while everyone else is in the know.

Despite everything, this game really does present itself with a lot of uniqueness and character. For its time, it's an extremely cool experience, with fully 3D environments that can be explored in first person, third person, and at fixed angles.

I went into this game expecting it to be a joke.
