The modern paradox: β€œwhile capitalism affords us the science to decode nature’s laws, its momentum denies us the ability to abide them in any rational way.”

Billionaires Should Not Exist Yes, every billionaire really is a policy failure.

"The self-made myth conceals the multitude of barriers to wealth accumulation and reinforces the notion that if you’re poor, it’s because you’re lazy or made bad choices."

I was in a cafe sitting next to two friends - a young man and young women - setting up Hinge dating app accounts, when the man went on a rant about the possible pronouns one could choose. Don't worry, he qualified it with, "Look, I'm a progressive, I'm an ally, but..."

I'm glad to hear some people are enjoying this gloomy, joyless adaptation. Dorfman's criticisms ring true, I think, if you have ever read the book and been enchanted by it. The adaptation has its merits - cinematically - but does not come close to capturing the essence of Gabo's masterpiece.

David Lynch, who brought surrealism into the cineplex, dies at 78 The renowned director mixed melodrama and horror in movies such as β€œBlue Velvet” and β€œMulholland Drive.” He helped trigger a TV revolution with β€œTwin Peaks.”

Breaking news: David Lynch, the surrealist filmmaker who bridged the mainstream and avant-garde, exploring the sinister recesses of the human psyche with an unsettling blend of melodrama, whimsy and nightmarish horror, has died. He was 78.

Are men’s reading habits truly a national crisis? The questionable statistic at the heart of the β€œmen don’t read fiction” discourse.

"When it comes to prestige, the literary man appears to be thriving β€” he’s just, crucially, less likely to also be straight and white than he used to be."

I've found that academics are *much* more weary of embracing AI, even those that code (in whatever capacity) compared to people in industry. It's a useful tool that can potentially help you learn and do things you didn't know how to. We just need to recognize that it also has huge limitations.

I am begging computer scientists to read more broadly and deeply. It's great that you've discovered image-based sexual abuse, but sociologists, gender-based violence scholars, psychology, comms studies, etc. have been doing this work for at least a decade now. READ US.

F.B.I. Says It Found Largest Cache of Homemade Explosives in Its History at Va. Farm Investigators discovered more than 150 devices, mostly pipe bombs, on a property outside Norfolk, court papers say.

The fact that the FBI didn’t hold a press conference announcing the largest seizure of self-made explosives in history tells you everything you need to know about race and ideology of the suspect. Wanna guess? www.nytimes.com/2024/12/31/u...
