Charlie Kirk seems to have been a man with dreadful opinions but his killing is inevitably going to create a martyr who provides a shield and an excuse for dreadful people to do dreadful things in his name. It provides the justification they were searching for.

Another Johnson attempt to deflect attention. There is a compelling case for a publicly funded investigation into his behaviour and conduct in public office that interrogates his use of public money, his use of his position for personal gain and his inability to obey rules followed by others.

I listened to World at One and it was striking how partial the commentary was. A couple of people - a lawyer and an academic - gave context and the balance of the programme was devoted to a description of the policy which amounted to little more than a puff piece so perspective was unbalanced.

I was walking in Canary Wharf earlier today and there are a lot of St.George’s Cross and Union Jacks on lampposts. It made me distinctly uneasy and as someone who grew up in a catholic household in 1970/80s when these flags carried particular connotations to intimidate, the echo was loud and clear.

Newsnight has descended into little more than mid market televised radio with two poor presenters in Chorley and O’Connor who struggle with basics of live Tv and aren’t helped by atrocious editing. More Zoe, more Gillian Tett - it needs guests who know their subject rather than failed politicians.

The one positive I could come up with is the fact Pickford wasn’t forced into serious action too much. Leeds were restricted to hardly any attempts of note by a patchwork defence which should improve. Against this, we possessed even less of a threat. And, it was a truly awful game because of this.
