One of the great movies of my early life. Saw it several years later when I was about 15. The Reginald Rose script was exceptional, the characters well-drawn, and the performances, especially Lee Cobb and Henry Fonda, along with Jack Warden, just a master class in acting. Sidney Lumet’s first film.

This was a decent effort. But the anthem for our time was dropped by Bruce Springsteen ten days ago, IMHO.

3/How would it satisfy the electorate to go through the same machinations if the Democrats won both Houses, if we fail to re-purpose democracy to its original intent of serving The People? Over the last forty years we’ve failed to hold miscreants to account. What magical formula will change that?

2/the same 2/3rds vote to convict on impeachment of the president or another member of the Executive Branch. We saw how these efforts failed consistently through both the final two years of Trump One and the four-year term of Biden. Obfuscation by Republicans and a corrupt Court system failed us.

1/ I find it alarming that the people who express frustration with government simply don’t understand how it works. One house or both, it doesn’t matter with this White House. The 60-vote requirement to move legislation in the Senate; the 2/3rds vote to overcome a presidential veto of legislation;

I do recall the discussions that wound around what we could expect from any direct argument we might make. The process devolved into an organizing effort. It was slick in some regards but admittedly a clusterfuck from the get-go. It presaged the Mondale disaster.

As I was writing the response I was thinking the same thing. Memory serves there was little cohesion among the various groups nationally. Living in Orange County, CA, still highly conservative, it was an uphill slog.

I was involved with a citizens group named Beyond War in 1984. Marches and demonstrations came to no useful end as we couldn’t gain traction to change the actions of the Reagan Administration in the crucial effort to stop nuclear proliferation.

If you haven’t yet Emily, the audio version of his memoir is an absolute masterpiece. He riffs throughout his reading provoking gales of laughter from the reader. Just one of the funniest individuals of my lifetime.
