I would also point out that Congress is supposed to direct a lot of these areas (tariffs, declaring war, immigration law…) and has just let Trump do things without exerting any kind of oversight. It’s Congress that’s broken. We wouldn’t be better off if Mike Johnson were PM.

We do have parliamentary control over the president. Parliament (Congress) has just declined to exert that control. At literally any moment they could commence impeachment proceedings and remove him.

We’ve spent the last 15 years at least talking about how everyone is looking for “authenticity” in everything and yet for some reason the democrats can’t let go of consultants selling them reheated advice from 1992.

Arresting someone for a crime is not a violation of civil rights laws, come on now.

The flip side of this conversation. European healthcare costs are mostly low due to price controls, not single payer (which is only a UK strategy). The U.S. won’t price control, but it’s also unclear how much cutting high U.S. health spending would impact global health innovation. It’s complicated!

Also Germany specifically has made a bunch of dumb energy decisions, but that’s a different rant.

Europe, despite American discourse to the contrary, has been stuck in a damaging austerity spiral since the financial crisis, and their governments aren’t spending enough to stimulate growth. We just don’t spend when we’re not in crisis.
