🩺 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 have successfully advocated for advertising restrictions before. Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada led the push for comprehensive tobacco control, first calling for a tobacco advertising ban in a CMAJ editorial in 1991. It's time to apply the same tools to fossil fuels.

🛑 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: Evidence from bans on tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food advertising shows that comprehensive marketing restrictions can reduce harmful consumption and improve health outcomes. France and more than 40 cities worldwide have restricted or banned fossil fuel advertising.

🏭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸: Companies selling fossil fuels have used advertising, public relations, and misinformation campaigns to entrench product use and delay health-protective climate policies, using the same tactics Big Tobacco used for decades.

🫁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: Fossil fuel combustion causes 8.7 million premature deaths every year from air pollution alone. Climate change—driven primarily by fossil fuels—adds to this toll through food insecurity, infectious disease, and extreme weather events that kill and sicken millions more.
